New Picture Book Out Today: The Race to the Beach! by Anna Shuttlewood

Happy book birthday to The Race to the Beach by Anna Shuttlewood!  This is such a cute book and my kids love it!

The story is about a group of zoo animals that decide to spend a day at the beach.  They get the great idea to have a race to see who can swim the farthest into the ocean.  Everyone wants to win except giraffe, who appears indifferent to the taunts of the other animals.  We soon find out why giraffe decided to play the part of a spectator rather than participator, and it wasn't because he's afraid of swimming!

My kids love this book.  They've been taking swimming lessons in the summer, so it resonated with them really well.  I really liked how giraffe didn't let the other animals ruffle him.  He knew that his particular skills might be needed and he didn't let peer pressure get to him.  I also liked the way it ended, and was happy that the other animals learned to respect giraffe.
