While my kids loved the first book, they didn't get as excited about this one. It had a much slower pace and many of the jokes were over their heads. My kids weren't instantly drawn into the story, and they never did get as engrossed in it as they did with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was still a good book, but not the masterpiece that the first book was.
Even so, it's worth the read, especially if you or your children are fans of Roald Dahl. You can't go too wrong with one of his books.

I'm actually curious about what happened to Charlie. I'm sure it won't be as exciting, but I think my curiosity will win out. Is it a more mature read compared to the first book? Is that why your kids didn't understand the jokes?
ReplyDeleteYes...kind of. Lots of the jokes in this book were more subtle and aimed at older children that could understand puns. It was still a good book, it just didn't have the same magic to it that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had.
