My Thoughts:
This book is a lot of fun. The African plains setting with meerkats and jackals and ostriches made for a unique backdrop for the story. I read this out loud to my kids and they loved it. They thought that Uncle Fearless was particularly funny and that the jackals were pretty scary. They really liked the meerkats' nicknames for everything and the way Fearless always said, "what what".
The story itself is cute and perfect to read at Christmas time. It is a story of bravery, selflessness, and giving.
My only criticism is that in the beginning it was hard to know what the meerkats were actually saying. They kept whipping out all these nicknames which made it difficult to read out loud as well as hard to understand. But once we figured out all the nicknames and character quirks, we were good.
